Keep some of these ideas in mind as you work your consultant job. The demand for you to be multiple personalities so to speak. At times you will be challenged to fill the roles of many things such as an advisor, expert, sales person, problem solver, guider, banker, publisher, referee, and the list goes on.
The most important step is to get clients. To do this you need to present yourself professionally by showing your client your proof of what you can do and that you can deliver. On top of that you need to make them trust you after all , they are counting on to help their business grow. They will be trusting you with their finances basically and their career in your hands. Personal selling is pretty simple there are only a few tips that you need to consider and take in mind. Polished social skills will bring you a long way in this field. Make sure that you are listening to everything that they are saying but at the same time making sure that you are asking the right questions. Make sure you practice and practice till you get everything right and be willing to adapt to any new situation as the circumstances come up. By practicing a lot you will deliver a near perfect presentation and if you win their trust, you win their business.
That is guerilla marketing and some of the pointers I've learned.
